What Are Worm Castings
Worm casting, also known as "worm manure", is a the end result of using one of our Worm Factory. Castings are the most nutrient rich fertilizer available and will stimulate plant growth more than any other natural product on the market today. Since castings are 100% pure, all natural, and organic in nature, castings are one of the most popular organic fertilizers available today for anyone wanting. Adding castings to your garden completes the circle of gardening using your garden waste as fertilizer for your vegetables.
As the worm process your kitchen scraps and other organic materials, they break it all down into a power packed compost materials, "castings". These castings are rich in plant nutrients, trace minerals, and growth enhancers. Adding castings into your gardening soil results in a significant increase in microbial life, benefiting plants at the root level. Castings will stimulate plant growth more than any other natural product on the market, help your soil retain water, and inhibit plant disease like root rot. Plus you can make your own with a simple Worm Factory. |
Unlike like commercial fertilizers, worm castings will not burn young plants and can be safely used during all growing stages of your vegetables. Additionally, castings are easily absorbed and nearly instantaneously by your garden plants while slowing releasing their nutrients for 60-90 after application. Extremely dark and rich in texture, tests on worm castings have shown the nitrogen content to be 5 times greater than ordinary topsoil, the phosphate 7 times greater, potash 11 times, and magnesium 3 times.

Need more proof? Both sets of plants were grown in the same soil with one difference. The plants on the left in this photo had worm castings added at a rate of 10% by weight (1 part castings to 9 parts soil). As you can see, the root structure is superior as well as being taller and a deeper green.
Nothing will have as big an impact in your garden like adding worm castings. Castings are highly concentrated and a little will go a long way. |
How To Use Worm Castings
Indoors:
Worm Castings can be added to potting soil or mixed into the soil of house plants that are existing. Worm Castings can also be top dressed on household and inside plants and the nutrients will soak down thru the soil each time they get watered. Repeat every 2 - 3 months as the plants use up the nutrients. Worm Castings can be used when starting your seeds indoors. The size and growth of vegetable seedlings and transplants will be noticeable improved with the use of Worm Castings. Mix 1 part Worm Casting to 3 part soil or seed starting mix. |
In the Garden:
When using Worm Castings in the garden, spread worm castings and incorporate them into the surface soil levels of your raised beds. Use anywhere from 1" to 4" of Worm Castings. Worm Castings can also be added to the bottom of the planting hole when setting out transplants, or worked into the soil surrounding established flowers and vegetables. When planting seeds, put a handful of worm castings in each hole and plant your seed. Side dress with Worm Castings during the growing season at a rate of 1/2 cup per plant every 2 months. Worm Castings are gentle enough not to burn your seeds or the roots of your plants. Compost Pile: Spread a thin layer of Worm Castings in between every new layer of compost. The worm castings help to start the composting action going. |
